Ghana to launch chip-embedded passports on April 28 — passport services go 24/7
Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

Ghana is set to usher in a new era of passport issuance with the introduction of chip-embedded passports beginning Monday, April 28, 2025. The move, announced by Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, signals a major technological leap aimed at enhancing national security and improving service delivery.

The new biometric passports, embedded with digital chips, are designed to meet international security standards and streamline identification at border controls. According to the Minister, this upgrade will significantly enhance the speed and security of travel for Ghanaian passport holders.

As part of broader passport reforms, the Ministry is also rolling out 24-hour passport office operations nationwide. This means Ghanaians can now access passport services at any time, day or night.

In another major convenience boost, applicants will now have the option to receive their passports via direct courier delivery, eliminating the need for in-person pickups.

To enhance transparency and reduce uncertainty, an electronic tracking system (e-Tracking) is being introduced. This feature will allow applicants to monitor the progress of their passport applications in real time, from submission to delivery.

Under the new system, passport processing and delivery will be completed within 15 days—a significant reduction from the previous waiting period. In addition, the Ministry is proposing a reduction in passport application fees from GH¢500 to GH¢350. However, this fee cut is subject to parliamentary approval once the House returns from recess and amends the current Fees and Charges Act.

“This marks a new era in our passport service delivery,” said Hon. Okudjeto Ablakwa. “When we promise, we deliver.”

The reforms come as part of Ghana’s ongoing efforts to digitize government services and improve access, security, and efficiency in public administration.
