Mintah Akandoh advocates dialogue to resolve Nurses’ strike, warns against hasty decisions
Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has underscored the significance of dialogue and engagement in addressing the ongoing standoff between the government and the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), following the organisation’s nationwide strike.

This situation arises as the National Labour Commission (NLC) has obtained an interlocutory injunction aimed at halting the strike.

Nonetheless, the GRNMA asserts that it has yet to receive any formal communication from the NLC and insists that the strike remains in full effect.

In an interview with Citi Eyewitness News on Friday, June 6, 2025, Mr. Akandoh highlighted that the dispute originates from an agreement established prior to the current administration, necessitating a careful and comprehensive approach to resolution.

He cautioned against the perils of hastily implementing decisions without fully understanding the underlying complexities, asserting that continuity in governance does not equate to blindly enforcing policies without thorough review.

“This agreement was intended for implementation in 2024. It was inherited, and governance is continuous; thus, one inherits both assets and liabilities.

"You cannot simply act without comprehension; engagement is essential to determine what is best for the country. It is crucial that we continue discussions on this matter.

“It is not a straightforward issue; people may rush to implement it, but that is not the solution. Anyone familiar with these matters will acknowledge that it is not as simple as it appears.

"It is vital to engage and to comprehend why it has yet to be implemented. Understanding the background is key.

“You should not enforce policies merely because you have encountered them; rather, you must engage,” Mr. Akandoh asserted.

He further urged the striking nurses to reconsider their position and return to their duties.
