The Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe and former Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has officially declared his intention to contest for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 18, Dr Adutwum stated that he would formally enter the race once the party opens nominations.

“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he wrote.
Known for his innovative contributions to Ghana’s education sector during his tenure as Minister for Education, Dr Adutwum’s entry into the race adds momentum to what is expected to be a keenly contested internal election.

His announcement comes just a day after the NPP’s National Executive Committee confirmed that the party’s presidential primaries will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Dr Adutwum now joins a growing list of NPP heavyweights expected to contest the flagbearer slot, including 2024 presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, outspoken former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, and former Minister for Agriculture Bryan Acheampong.
